Mahogany Hammock

This is a great place for a good walk.  Tim went one way and I went another.  I did almost three miles.  I kept stopping to take pictures.

There were tons of butterflies; queens and gulf fritillaries.

This osprey has another stellar nest!

Florida Bay was calm this morning.

After we cooled down, we took a bike ride to the marina.  We went to the Visitor Center and wandered among all the exhibits.

In the gift shop, we met the cashier, Don.  He has lived in this area for many years and he had lots of knowledge to share.  We enjoyed swapping travel stories with him.

Guy Bradley was a game warden charged with the responsibility of protecting the wild bird species in the Everglades from poachers.  During a confrontation, he was shot and killed.  The Audubon Society raised funds to help to ensure his family had what they needed.  The new Visitor Center is named in his honor.

We cycled around the marina and we saw no critters again today.

From the bridge, there is a nice view of the canal.  The red color of the water is due to the tannins from the red mangrove trees.

Later this afternoon, we went for a Jeep ride.  We went to see Pine Glades Lake.  The water levels in southern Florida are very high.  The road to the lake was flooded in places but the Jeep had no trouble getting through.  The edge of the lake reached the roadside.    This is still a peaceful and lovely place.

We stopped at Mahogony Hammock to walk the boardwalk trail.

This evening, we went to the Flamingo Lodge Restaurant and had a good meal.

We wanted to go and sit up on the balcony but after dark, the mosquitoes are tenacious.  We are spraying ourselves every time we go out.  That seems to be the most effective deterrent.  Even so, this evening we were chased inside!
