Friday

711 January 21, 2022 Friday

I had a great walk in the state park and enjoyed the “company” of my friend Vicki.  We chatted as I walked and the time passed quickly.  It is a goal for me to try and stay more connected…I am not really good at it but I know how important it is especially as we have decided to live such a nomadic life.

The Borrego Springs Farmers Market happens every Friday from 8am to noon.  We planned our schedule around this event.  I love to walk through a market and this one has a lot of delicious choices.  We started at the French Gourmet Bakery.  We allowed ourselves 2 fresh croissants.  We visited the tamale lady and chose two different vegetarian options.  The organic produce vendors had busy stalls and we stuffed our bags full of healthy vegetables…asparagus and greens and avocadoes and cauliflower and Brussel sprouts and snap peas.  Then we picked fresh fruits and berries.  We stopped at the Mediterranean guy and got hummus and beet salad and stuffed grape leaves.

This afternoon, Tim biked and I went back to town to gather a few groceries.

I had a chance to talk with another old friend, Melinda…so nice to catch up.  I enjoyed our visit very much!

We packed salads and took them to a new park that we have never visited before.  We loved those buttery, flaky croissants and the fresh spinach and strawberries.  I also got these tiny little sweet yellow tomatoes.  When you eliminate most of the fatty, sugary, processed foods from your diet…it is amazing how wonderful whole foods taste!

We walked the trails in the park.  There are pretty little churches across the street with lovely mountain views.

Since our last trip to the desert the other day, our thoughts have often drifted to the “hiker.”  As we drove through Fish Creek Wash, on our way to Sandstone Canyon, we passed a guy hiking.  As we always do, we stopped to ask if he was okay, if he needed water.  He said he was good and we went on our way.  We had both noticed and commented on the fact that he had no gear and it looked like he was only carrying a small hydration backpack.  We decided that he must have a car parked somewhere nearby.  Around dusk that same evening, about three hours later, the “hiker” walked past our campsite.  We were surprised to see him still walking.  He had hiked at least another 7-8 miles since our encounter earlier in the day.  We stopped him and asked him if he needed water.  He said he only had about one-half bottle left.  We tried to give him several bottles but he took only one.  He intended to hike through and said he would probably have to negotiate his way in the moonlight.  We asked him if he had eaten, if he had food and he said he had eaten awhile back.  We gave him a couple of protein bars.  We asked him where he was going and he stated he was headed to “Hollywood Campground a destination south and west of here.”  We knew that the hike through the remainder of the canyon was at least a mile long and then there were mountains.  We knew of no campground within walking distance and no campground at all by that name.  We asked him if he had a map and when he said he did not, we asked him to look at ours to orient himself.  He said that he had his phone and if he ran out of battery, that he had picked out some landmarks along the way.  He seemed resistant to any help.  He walked away from us then, on into the canyon, into the darkness.  He was wearing long pants, Tevis sandals, and a short-sleeved shirt.  The forecast was for 45 degrees.  We felt bereft after he left us…should we have done more?  We were concerned for his safety.  We were in a very remote location and he was walking even further into the wilderness.  Would he be, okay?  We immediately wished that we had told him to come back to us if he ran into trouble.  When we took our hike the next morning, we kept looking for signs of his passage…we hope that he made his way.

Overnight In Sandstone Canyon

710 January 19-20, 2022 Overnight In Sandstone Canyon

Happy Birthday Debbie!

After a nice walk in the state park and after Tim got done with his stretching and weight lifting…Tim is really liking the fitness room at this resort…and his bike ride; we drove to Sandstone Canyon for another overnight camping trip.

We have been to Sandstone Canyon several times before and it is one of our favorites!  It never disappoints!

We drove as far as we could and decided to camp at the far end of the canyon.

Before we got set up, we took a hike past the campsite, where we found a slot canyon.

We enjoyed our dinner by the fire.  Because we were in a canyon with deep walls, it got dark very early…and very dark!  The sky though was lit with stars and gorgeous!  The full moon had not yet risen when we climbed up into our loft.

Sometime during the night, the moon came out and brightened the whole world.  The sand around us glowed white in the moonlight.

Tim was up at daybreak watching the rising sun and the setting moon.

We took a hike back into Sandstone Canyon.  We walked 1.5 miles and there was still no end in sight.

Many people have said that the desert just looks like more rocks.  To us, the desert is alive.  The allure for us here is the starkness and the resilience of the place.  The Anza-Borrego Desert only gets 6 inches of rain each year.  The plants and animals here have all adapted to survive and thrive in this atmosphere.  Seed pods are carried by wind or water or animals into the wash. Seeds can lie dormant for years until there is enough moisture to propagate and grow.  It amazes me to see recognize these signs of life.  As we walked through the wash, there were scattered wildflowers some green and some just starting to blossom.  I see so much more than “just rocks!”  This was a great hike!

Bits of cholla break off and are carried along…sometimes caught in the fur of an animal, sometimes by water or wind, sometimes in Tim’s foot/tennis shoe. The only cholla growing here are high on the ridge. This bit will try to root itself in the sand and grow…but the wash isn’t such a great growing place for a cactus…

We walked by these pictographs three times before noticing them on the canyon wall.  We wondered who put these here and how long ago…someone trying to survive here in this desert.

We drove the long way back to Borrego Springs windows down and music up!

This evening, we went into town to try the Mexican restaurant, Pablito’s. We ate outside on the patio; the evening mild and the food delicious. It brought back thoughts of dinner here three years ago with Kyle and Allison with pitchers of mango margaritas…such fun and such wonderful memories

Borrego Badlands

709 January 17-18, 2022 Borrego Badlands

We began the day with our exercise; my walk today in the State Park.

In the later morning, we packed the coolers and the Jeep for our overnight excursion.  We drove into the Anza-Borrego Desert.

We were looking for a campsite.  There were newly posted signs…No Ground Fires…Only Fires in Metal Containers…and there were NO metal containers.  We usually build a firepit in the sand with a ring of stones.  The park is trying to eliminate fire scars and charring and trying to reduce the wildfire risk.  This is California and it is very dry here.  We decided to travel further into the Badlands where the vegetation is sparser and where we could make our ground fire.  We opted to sacrifice some view for a more wind protected site.  Even so…the vista was amazing.  Tim and I both made a video of our surroundings…dueling videos!

It was really cloudy and the shifting light was mesmerizing…I took lots and lots of pictures…here are a few of the best.

Gathering firewood…I was really proud of this find. It turned out to be dry and good hard wood!

The sunset was tangerine and lavender…pictures are unworthy.

We made our omelets as the Wolf Moon rose.

We were serenaded by a choir of coyotes…haunting on this full moon night.

Back to pavement!

During the night, we had some rain.  In the morning though everything appeared to be dry…except the tent!  When we got back to the RV, we re-opened the tent and it dried quickly in the warmth and sunshine.

After unpacking and cleaning gear, Tim used the fitness room and biked and I walked again in the State Park.

Tim went out in search of a metal fire container and found a suitable pan for $8.00… yahoo! Now, we can camp wherever we want!

Late this afternoon, I was able to connect with a friend from childhood…such a nice phone visit.

This evening, we drove into town and had dinner at the Red Ocotillo.

We are hoping to go on anohter Jeep adventure tomorrow night! We just love this stuff!

Getting Settled

708 January 15-16, 2022 Getting Settled

We arrived in Borrego Springs at mid-day on Saturday. We knew we had arrived when we saw the first of the metal sculptures.

The community park was studded with tents and we were hopeful that it was the Farmers Market…but it was a craft show. I wandered through but have not much use for crafts these days.

We spent our afternoon getting settled. We plan to be here for a month.

On Sunday, I walked from the campground all the way to Christmas Circle and around the park and back. It was a great walk. I was able make calls and listen to my book so all was good and the time went quickly! As I passed the gas station, I took this picture…yes…we are definitely in California.

We spent the day shopping for groceries, doing laundry, cleaning and of course since it is Sunday…we watched NFL Wild Card games.

I know that most of you are getting icky weather. It seems rather surreal to us…we have flip flops on and the windows are open! Please be safe and stay warm!

Tomorrow, we are planning to take an overnight Jeep excursion.

Mountain Palm Springs – Quiet and Solitude

707 January 12-14, 2022 Mountain Palm Springs – Quiet and Solitude

On Wednesday, we drove from Yuma and traveled about 100 miles to Mountain Palm Springs. We knew we were getting close as we drove through a great field of windmills.

This is a primitive campground on S-2 in Southern California. We have stayed here before and we love it. The setting is remote and starkly beautiful. It is nestled in the green Anza- Borrego desert. We chose a site at the very end near the trailhead.

We spent the remainder of that first day walking in the desert and enjoying the peace and stillness.

I began Thursday with a walk. I took the park road back to the highway and got a good 4 miles done. There is no cell service here. I walked without talking on the phone or listening to music or an audiobook. It was a good time for some quiet introspection.

We packed our picnic and drove the Jeep to Indian Gorge. We took the road to the southern valley first. At the end we parked and hiked the trail up into the canyon and to the palms. The hike involved some rock scrambling. The trail is there among the rocks.

Next we took the northern trail and we walked and here we had our lunch. The views of the valley beyond were incredible.

Morning skies.

On Friday, we decided to take the Canyon Sin Nombre down into the Carrizo Badlands.

We stopped to hike a slot canyon with more boulder climbing…such a great challenge!

We drove through a long wash and found the trail that took us among the Badlands and then to a ridgeline. The road was twisting and turning and involved some technical skill…which made for a fun ride.

We saw a coyote not far from the RV. He appeared to be circling the bushes where the rabbit warrens are…looking for dinner.

It was nice to spend days being unplugged and disconnected and enjoying the peacefulness.

Desert Adventure

706 January 10-11, 2022 Desert Adventure

The beginning of Monday was windy with gusts to 15mph.  It was warm though…57 degrees when I went for my walk.  The pelicans were gone from the pond…flown somewhere warm for the winter…maybe Mexico!

We packed everything for our camping trip to the desert and left after lunchtime.

Welcome back to Picacho!  The wild burro must be the ambassador!

Usually, our goal is to find a place with a gorgeous view but today, our mission was to find a site tucked away out of the wind.  We explored all kinds of nooks and crannies and found a wash with high sides where we could take shelter.  There was a definite difference in the strength of the wind when we were there in the bottom.

I was setting up camp and Tim was gathering rocks for the fire ring.  We are always careful when we collect firewood and move rocks…you never know what critters are hiding!  Tim called to me to come and look.  We saw our first desert scorpion.  It had been beneath a stone.  It was a light tan/nude color and translucent.  It blended in so well with the rocks that I couldn’t focus on it to get a picture before Tim felt compelled to smash it.  No scorpions on the campsite…it’s a rule!

We enjoyed the afternoon, basking in the sun, listening to music, the time passed quickly.  Since we were so low, the sun slipped behind the mountains and it was nearly dark at 4:00.

We had citrus salmon on salads with cara cara oranges for dessert.

We crawled up into the tent after watching clouds drift across the half moon and stars.

The tent was beaten and battered most of the night by fierce wind.  I was so thankful for our safe and snug RTT.  This is a purchase that we have NEVER regretted.  The opportunities it allows us and the quality of the tent make it a worthwhile investment!  I was also thankful that we were NOT perched on a ridgeline!

It was still windy this morning as we had our morning coffee and we were happy to have a fire.

As we often do, we took the scenic route home following trails across the desert toward the Chocolate Mountains and finally to pavement.  It will be a while before we travel back this way…we certainly enjoyed our time here!

A leanto/shade shelter.

Last look at Picacho Peak.

We are traveling tomorrow in the Anza Borrego desert. We plan to camp there for three nights and may not have service to post the blog. Once we are in Borrego Springs on saturday, we will get caught up!

Live Music

705 January 8-9, 2022 Live Music

On Saturday, West Wetlands was hosting a 5K/10K race.  I joined the other walkers and joggers and runners and was cheered on by the volunteers manning the course.  It was fun!  As part of the festivities, this hot air balloon landed in the field.

In the afternoon, we had two date related options for entertainment.  The Yuma Medjoul Date Festival was happening downtown.  We went several years ago and it was a good time…lots of vendors and food trucks and live music and everything date…shakes and cases of dates and breads and all kinds of other yummy stuff.  We were hesitant though to join the inevitable throng of people.  We elected instead, to go back to Naked Dates for live music.  Another afternoon spent in the desert sunshine.  We bought our dinner, spinach salad with dates and blue cheese and almonds and bacon with a date vinaigrette and chicken pesto flatbread…lots of savory flavors.

When we left, we took the long way home.  We passed farm fields planted with every kind of lettuce and broccoli and cauliflower.  We took a canal road all the way from Wellton back to the highway in Yuma.

Sunday morning there were white pelicans resting in the pond.

The remainder of the day was spent doing chores and watching football.  We are preparing for our trip to Borrego Springs and also getting ready for another desert adventure.  We plan to sleep out on Monday night…so look for our story on Tuesday!

Back In The Groove

704 January 7, 2022 Back In The Groove

Riverfront RV Park Yuma, Arizona Day 3

We have spent the past couple of days getting back in our routine.  We have filled the fridge and the pantry with lots of healthy fruits and vegetables and chicken and fish; after one too many Christmas treats in Atlanta!  We are almost acclimated to the time change.  It seems like it is easier when we drive as the time difference is more gradual.  We are walking and biking and taking dinner to the park.  We are getting used to “just us” again…it is really quiet without the noise and joys of those small boys!

New memorial along the bike path…

As always, we are grateful for the opportunity to open the windows, to be in the warmth and sunshine…all in January.  We know that most of you are at least chilly…we are sending warm vibes from Arizona!

We have spent a lot of time in Yuma and we are looking forward to moving on soon!

Winter Break In Atlanta

703 December 13, 2021 – January 6, 2022

Winter Break In Atlanta

The past three weeks have passed too quickly.  We had so much fun in Atlanta!  The boys are 3 and 5 and are just a joy to be with.  We spent the holidays playing!

David and Dre were able to have one night out.  That was the night we let the boys jump in mud puddles!

In fact, we did lots of messy activities…like playdoh.

Painting.

Slime.

The boys both love to mix and roll and cut and decorate gingerbread men.  This time they were really able to participate more and stuck with it until the end.

We took them for hikes to the “stream woods.”

We also went to Stone Mountain and hiked the island…of course with a picnic.

We enjoyed some playground time as well.

And PLAY, PLAY, PLAY!!!

And cuddles.

And lots of silliness!

On Christmas Eve, we rang the bells, calling for Santa while sprinkling oatmeal in the yard for the reindeer.

Kyle bought the boys bongo and conga drums and we had a family music night…our conductor…Oliver of course!

We love being a part of their sweet family and are grateful for the time we got to spend together, creating beautiful memories and traditions.

On January 4th we flew back to Phoenix and on the 5th, we drove the Jeep back to Yuma.  We will stay here for the next week and then we will move on to southern California to Borrego Springs.

We realized during the break that we have surpassed the 700 mark for our blog entries…we still feel so grateful to be able to do this!

Preparing For Atlanta

December 10-12, 2021

Preparing For Atlanta

Riverfront RV Park Yuma, Arizona Day 19-21

The past three days have been about preparing for our trip to Atlanta.  Tomorrow, we are storing the RV here in Yuma.  Then we will take the Jeep and drive to Phoenix.  We have a flight to Atlanta and will spend the holidays with David and his family.  We plan to come back to Yuma on January 5, 2022.

We aren’t sure where we will spend the remainder of the winter.  We might be in Yuma for a while in January…it depends on the weather!

We did go back to Naked Dates on Saturday…the music and the food never disappoint.  It is the middle of December and we were in the desert, in the warm sunshine, drinking wine, and listening to great music.  Another day well wasted!

We hope that all of you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.  The blog will resume with our return to Arizona.
